I think it is hard... As a working mom, who is struggling more than a bit with it, I've used this term with my husband more than once.

Yes, her use of it is lacking compassion, as most of us do not have the resources.

But choosing to have our home (modest) as opposed to our townhome was our choice. Choosing to have our son in private school, is our choice that is available b/c it is around the same cost as daycare.

The alternative choice would be for me to be home.

Every one of us makes choices. We need to own them.

Even if your choice is simply to survive as a single mom who fell into this situation through the worst of circumstances.

Some choices may not feel like that, but the reality is - you are making a choice.

As I told my husband... Own your choice, know that you are making it with the best interests of your family in mind & that will take away the guilt plaguing it.

I think it is a necessary evil of working. And, as gracious as they've been to you, it makes sense that loyalty should be rewarded.

But yes, that would suck the wind out of any gain I would make from the training...

Have a great trip!

It does sound like a good compromise. At least you don't have to stay the entire retreat. Plus, it will give your husband and son some alone time.

You said it perfectly. I think how it was said was terrible but Ann Romney does NOT fit the lifestyle that most SAHMs-at ALL. And great that she CAN but, yes, many mothers can't and choose not to forgo being a mother due to financial reasons...we're super because we make it work. I would LOVE to work part time or not at all...but I can't and I love my job so I make it work.

Well said! Many of us do not have the "choice". We work 6 days a week, get home after 6 pm and still have the job of raising our children, keeping the house, clean, etc and still try to make time to keep ourselves in shape. I have a friend that stays home with her two children and i love her and I'm proud she has that option, but it is difficult not to feel a bit of jealousy that she can walk 3 miles a day and start a meal from scratch at 4 in the afternoon and put her children to bed at 8 and still have time for herself.

There are other choices at play too. Ones that we either make for ourselves, or have made for us.

Some of us might choose to return to work, not just because of economic considerations. As crazy as it might sound, being a working mom can also be about preserving sanity. It might be a challenge for some moms to stay at home all day with young children without somehow also stretching our minds and engaging our talents in the workforce.

Still for some who may choose to return to work, being a working mom is not an option. In some jurisdictions, quality child care is either too limited or too cost prohibitive for it too make sense for mom to go back to work. How could we justify spending all or most or more of our monthly income on child care? And yet, this might sacrifice future career development and options.

Ah, choice is a dirty word, indeed.

You nailed my top two pet peeves, which I would shoot myself in the foot before saying: I'm so tired, and I'm so busy. Really? Try being 7.5 months pregnant, working full time with two little ones in diapers and two hours a day spent commuting. Until then, shut up! Life is not a tired/busy contest.
